Terrorism and the Muslim World

The terrorist activity that occurred during the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013 is no doubt an abomination and cowardly evil act.  Hopefully whoever the perpetrators are will be caught soon and brought to justice.

Many of the terrorist movements that started after the 1950s; Red Brigades in Germany, Red Army in Japan, Sandinistas in Nicaragua, Irish Republican Army in Ireland, Liberation Tigers of Tamil and many more have gone by the wayside.  But surprisingly, the terrorist movement started by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) has given rise to other Muslim terrorist groups that are still operational.

The al-Qaeda and Taliban Terrorists include the well- educated and the uneducated, western educated and madrassa educated, rich and poor. The educated and rich, however, have been successful in manipulating the illiterate and poor to join their repugnant causes. The indoctrination lies and innuendos warp the mind into such a fury that the zeal to die for God while killing innocents blurs all realities. The idea and thought that God would reward someone with 72 virgins for destroying the precious life is incomprehensible.

The Taliban have killed over 40,000 innocent citizens since 9/11 in Pakistan through suicide bombings and shootings. After 9/11, the U.S. forces quickly removed the Taliban from power; however, the terrain in Afghanistan and adjacent Pakistan provided them with natural hideouts and caves and along with al-Qaeda, they continue to roam freely in the rugged hills of the Waziristan area that covers a long border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Some of the Mullahs (Muslim religious leaders with a long beard) are now promoting that God has divided the world into two houses: “House of Peace” (Dar-al-Islam) and “House of War (Dar-al-Harb). The first one is dominated by Muslims and the second by non-Muslims. They assert that it is a Muslim’s duty to wage war in order to bring non-Muslims into the House of Peace. In his famous book The Muqaddimah, the Muslim scholar Ibn Khaldun declares, “In the Muslim community, holy war is a religious duty, because of the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force.”

This insidious thinking is a major factor in the ascent of the terrorist movements in Islam. However, a growing number of Muslim scholars are saying, “Not so fast by quoting this verse from the Quran (2:256) “Let there be no compulsion in religion.”

However the terrorists have their own verse to justify their wicked acts (Quran 9:5): “But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war).”

The Progressive Muslims argue that the above verse was for the specific period in the past when Muslims were trying to survive the onslaught of Meccan pagans.  Unfortunately, the terrorists have been successful in drowning out all the voices of reason.  Unless, Muslims with sensible minds rise up to cut this cancer, this is bound to result in their own eventual death.
